Federer is the defending champion, and he’s as good as it gets on grass...

Sharapova and Williams Advance to Final

The 2013 French Open will see Maria Sharapova defends the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen against Serena Williams on Saturday.
Williams, not only the best player in the world now and for most of the past decade but among the greatest of all time, is, at 31, in the sort of form that would intimidate a tank, while Sharapova has committed herself to all-out war.

Sharapova concedes nothing to her American rival in willpower, and that is as good a mix as any fan of the women's game could wish for, because, with the exception of Azarenka, there probably was no one else here the past fortnight equipped to give Williams a decent fight.

Roger Federer out of the French Open...

Roger Federer went down at Roland Garros to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga eliminated the major threat for most of the remaining men in the 2013 French Open.

The Frenchman's 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 win over the Swiss legend catapulted him into the semifinals of his country's hallowed tournament for the first time in his career.   With the field trimmed to six, at least four of the men should be at least a little happy to see Tsonga dismiss Federer.

Tsonga's next opponent will be Spanish veteran and clay-court specialist David Ferrer.

Ferrer is a game competitor, and beaten Tsonga two of the three times they've faced off, so his confidence should be high and he should be filled with a renewed sense of hope of reaching his first French Open final.

French Open 2013: Maria Sharapova slams Roland Garros for not having Hawk-Eye after suffering bad line call...

Maria Sharapova wants Hawk-Eye used at the French Open just as it is at all the other grand slams after suffering a wrong line call in her third-round clash.
Hawk-Eye’s ball-tracking technology is used at all the slams and Masters-level tournaments, with the exception of those contested on clay courts.   The theory is that the ball leaves a mark when it bounces on clay, allowing the umpire to climb down from his or her chair and adjudicate on contested decisions.   But the system is hardly foolproof.

Sometimes it is a matter of interpretation whether the little oval of displaced clay is touching the line or not.   And the new trend is for outraged players to seek photographic evidence.   The best recent example came from the event in Rome earlier this month, where Viktor Troicki went through a four-minute meltdown over a line call.   See video under Wimbledon 2013 Play Highlights http://youtu.be/165r4mM9edc
